Inside the Tech of a Paid Newsletter
Setting up a paid newsletter is quite a bit different, and perhaps more complex than setting up a simple blog. With a blog, you’ve got dozens of options, most of which are one-click installs. Pick your platform, choose a theme, and get to writing. It really can be that simple.

  • The biggest difference between a newsletter and just writing is that a newsletter is writing on a schedule.
  • Everyone's first few newsletters will be bad. So don't wait, just get them out. Now it's only up from there.
  • If you want to start writing a daily newsletter. First start with a weekly newsletter. If you can't do that, then this isn't serious enough for you.
  • Live and die by you newsletter deadline.
  • Commit to a schedule. Pick a day and hour that you will actually send the newsletter. Pick a day and hour to actually sit down and write it.
  • Schedule at least 40-60 minutes to write your newsletter. Don't be aggressive with the time needed here. You'll spend a lot more time formatting and with technical issues too. Schedule time for the whole process.
  • Spend at least 4 weeks writing to really see if you're into writing that specific newsletter.
  • Technologies come and go. Always have a backup plan or self-host your landing pages, etc.
  • Your writing personality will change as you write your newsletter throughout the years.
  • If you're distinctly a writer, the moment you get to a place you're comfortable it'll be very uncomfortable since you'll realize there is more to learn. You're never done as a writer.
  • Take your newsletter seriously. This should be something you're serious about. Change the schedule to fit around your newsletter, not the other way around. There are real trade offs.
  • A newsletter can really transform your life and your business.
  • It's absolutely magical to build real relationships with your newsletter readers. You may never meet them physically, but the relationships develop.
  • Now is the best time to start a newsletter. The tools can never be cheaper, even free! But ultimately in the end it's up to you to actually do it.
